Tetras are small to medium-sized freshwater fish known for their active schooling behavior, vibrant coloration, and peaceful nature. Among popular tetra species, these fish make excellent community pets and thrive best in an aquarium setup that includes groups of at least 6 individuals; larger groups often exhibit more natural behavior and vivid coloration. Most tetras prefer clean, stable water with effective filtration and enjoy planted aquariums that offer a blend of cover and open swimming space.

Tetras generally thrive in an aquarium setup that offers both open swimming areas and ample cover. Incorporating live plants, driftwood, rocks, and shaded spots can help these freshwater fish feel secure. Notably, many tetra species exhibit enhanced coloration and more natural behaviors when kept in larger groups. While good filtration and regular water changes are crucial for maintaining a healthy environment, extremely strong water movement is not necessary for most commonly kept tetra species.

Most tetra species are excellent community fish and thrive in a well-planned aquarium setup alongside other peaceful freshwater fish of similar size. Good tank mates for your tetras can include Corydoras, peaceful gouramis, rasboras, smaller rainbowfish, gentle barbs, dwarf cichlids, and other community fish. However, some larger or more active tetra species can be fin-nippers, particularly when kept in groups that are too small. It is advisable to avoid keeping small tetras with larger predatory fish that may see them as food.

Tetra species are generally omnivorous, making them a great addition to any aquarium setup. For their staple diet, feed a quality tropical flake or appropriately sized micro-pellet. Additionally, supplement their diet with foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, mysis, and other suitably sized frozen or live foods.
