MARINE ANGELFISH CARE GUIDE

 Marine Angelfish are some of the most striking fish available in the saltwater aquarium hobby. They range from smaller Dwarf Angelfish to large species that can reach well over a foot in length.

Most marine Angelfish appreciate mature aquariums with excellent water quality, plenty of established rockwork, and open swimming space. Rockwork provides hiding places, territories, and surfaces where many species naturally graze throughout the day.

Adult size, temperament, minimum aquarium size, and reef compatibility vary considerably by species.

 Marine Angelfish do best in established aquariums with plenty of live rock, caves, and hiding places, along with adequate open swimming space.

Many species spend much of the day exploring and grazing on rock surfaces.

Larger Angelfish require substantial swimming room as adults, while Dwarf Angelfish can be maintained in considerably smaller aquariums.

Strong filtration, good oxygenation, stable water parameters, and regular water changes are important.

 Standard and large marine Angelfish can reach significantly larger adult sizes than Dwarf Angelfish and generally require large, mature aquariums with substantial swimming space.

Many become increasingly territorial as they mature and may show aggression toward other Angelfish or similarly shaped fish.

Always select the aquarium based on the species' adult size, not the size of the juvenile being purchased.

 Dwarf Angelfish generally remain much smaller than their larger relatives but still have the characteristic personality and territorial behavior associated with marine Angelfish.

They require plenty of rockwork for hiding and grazing and can become territorial toward other Dwarf Angelfish, particularly in smaller aquariums.

Their smaller adult size makes them suitable for moderately sized marine aquariums, but exact minimum tank size varies by species.

 Marine Angelfish can generally be kept with appropriately sized marine community fish.

Avoid housing them with extremely timid fish that may be intimidated or prevented from feeding.

Keeping multiple Angelfish together requires careful species selection, adequate aquarium size, and plenty of territories. Aggression is particularly likely between similar-looking species.

 Marine Angelfish are generally omnivorous and should receive a varied diet containing both marine plant and animal matter.

Offer quality marine Angelfish pellets or frozen preparations along with foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, marine algae, and spirulina-based foods.

Many species also benefit from foods containing marine sponge material, particularly larger Angelfish whose natural diets include significant amounts of sponge.

Feed a varied diet rather than relying on a single food.

Most marine Angelfish are best considered reef safe with caution.

Some individuals coexist successfully with corals for years, while others may nip at fleshy LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids, clam mantles, or other sessile invertebrates.

Dwarf Angelfish are often kept successfully in reef aquariums, but they are not guaranteed to be coral safe.

Large Angelfish generally present an even greater risk to corals and other sessile invertebrates.
